Strengthening Global Health through Unity: The One Earth, One Health & Healthcare Beyond Boundaries Initiative

On October 1, 2024, healthcare experts, policymakers, and international leaders gathered in Addis Ababa for the One Earth, One Health & Healthcare Beyond Boundaries Conference.

The event, hosted by the Embassy of India to Ethiopia and the Permanent Mission to the African Union, highlights India’s strides toward creating a global health ecosystem where healthcare transcends borders, following India’s historic 2023 G-20 presidency and advocacy for the African Union’s inclusion in the G-20 as a permanent member.

These efforts represent a renewed commitment to strengthening healthcare access, quality, and equity worldwide, underscoring the alignment of India’s One Earth, One Health vision with the goals of the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the United Nations’ Agenda 2030.

A Unified Vision for Health: One Earth, One Health

The One Earth, One Health concept, introduced by India, represents a holistic, global approach to healthcare, emphasizing the need for systems that support everyone, everywhere.

Reflecting on the importance of the conference, Indian Ambassador to Ethiopia, Anil Kumar Rai, underscored India’s commitment to reducing health inequities and advancing access to high-quality care across all regions, particularly Africa.

With a healthcare market anticipated to reach a valuation of $600 billion in 2024, India has emerged as a major player in medical innovation, high-quality healthcare services, and affordable medical devices, which have all contributed to narrowing healthcare gaps worldwide.

The event convened stakeholders from multiple fields, including healthcare providers, pharmaceutical companies, policymakers, and representatives from international organizations, all dedicated to exploring innovative solutions for global health challenges.

By fostering collaboration between nations, private companies, and healthcare experts, the One Earth, One Health initiative paves the way for a united approach to addressing global health needs, from increasing accessibility to high-quality services to promoting preventive care measures.

Bridging Health Gaps through Collaboration

Ambassador Rai’s opening remarks at the conference highlighted the shared goals between India and African nations, emphasizing the deep-rooted connection between India and Africa and their mutual commitment to improving healthcare outcomes.

The conference provided a platform for addressing some of the most pressing issues in healthcare, with discussions centered on access, equity, and the need for resilient, sustainable health systems.

Participants included representatives from the Ethiopian government, UN agencies, pharmaceutical manufacturers, and over 25 Ethiopian hospitals, as well as 10 hospitals from India. This gathering allowed participants to showcase ongoing initiatives and explore synergies that could address resource limitations, enhance health sector efficiencies, and increase accessibility to quality healthcare services in Africa and beyond.

Dr. Ramiz Alakbarov of the UN discussed India’s critical role in supplying affordable medical equipment globally, especially for humanitarian aid, despite recent funding challenges. The conference, uniting governments, international organizations, and private-sector leaders, reinforced a shared vision for quality healthcare across Africa, rooted in collaborative innovation.

Secretary-General Manssour bin Mussallam of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) reiterated the importance of equitable access to healthcare, stating, “With equitable access to health, we set the basis for sustainable development.”

The importance of collaboration among countries in the Global South was a key focus, with Mr. Manssour bin Mussallam highlighting the lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly regarding the role of cooperation in mitigating healthcare crises. The collective response to COVID-19 revealed both the challenges and the opportunities that exist within global health systems, underscoring the importance of equitable, accessible healthcare that can withstand future pandemics.

Aligning Goals with African Union and United Nations Agendas

India’s One Earth, One Health vision closely aligns with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the United Nations’ Agenda 2030, both of which emphasize universal healthcare as a fundamental right and as a driver of sustainable development. The AU’s Agenda 2063 envisions a prosperous Africa where healthcare infrastructure is robust and accessible to all citizens. Similarly, the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) call for “Good Health and Well-being” as a core objective, setting targets to end preventable diseases and ensure universal access to healthcare services by 2030.

Through its G-20 presidency and support for AU representation, India has shown its commitment to these global health goals. Secretary-General Mansour bin Musalaha’s address praised the healthcare initiatives spearheaded by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing appreciation for India’s significant strides in promoting health equity and accessibility. This alignment of goals creates a foundation for meaningful collaboration between Indian and African health sectors, fostering partnerships that benefit patients across both regions.

Integrating Traditional and Modern Medicine

One of the unique aspects of the One Earth, One Health initiative is its recognition of both traditional and modern medicine as integral components of healthcare. Traditional medicine systems, deeply rooted in many African and Indian communities, provide valuable resources for preventive care and treatment. The WHO’s new Global Center for Traditional Medicine in Jamnagar, India, underscores the importance of these practices, highlighting their potential to complement modern healthcare approaches.

Mozocare, a major player in the Medical Value Travel (MVT) sector, sees value in combining traditional and modern medicine, recognizing the importance of personalized, patient-centric care. At Mozocare, we believe that integrating traditional knowledge with advanced medical practices not only broadens treatment options but also respects cultural diversity in healthcare, offering patients holistic solutions tailored to their unique needs

Advancing Medical Value Travel and Healthcare Technology

The conference highlighted the significant role of Medical Value Travel (MVT) in expanding global health access. India’s high-quality yet affordable healthcare options have made it a leading destination for medical tourism, allowing patients from around the world to access advanced medical treatments that may not be available in their home countries. Mozocare’s platform supports this movement, connecting patients with international hospitals, clinics, and medical professionals to ensure they receive the best care possible.

The inclusion of MVT professionals at the conference emphasizes the role that global travel can play in increasing health equity. Additionally, discussions covered the role of technology in healthcare, with a focus on telemedicine and artificial intelligence (AI). These technologies have the power to transform healthcare delivery, making it possible to reach patients in remote areas and providing efficient diagnostic and treatment solutions. Mozocare has actively integrated telemedicine into its services, enabling patients to consult with specialists globally, regardless of location.

Mozocare’s Role in Healthcare Beyond Boundaries

Mozocare’s commitment to connecting patients with global healthcare solutions aligns seamlessly with the vision of Healthcare Beyond Boundaries. By facilitating partnerships with hospitals, doctors, and healthcare facilities worldwide, Mozocare plays a vital role in making high-quality healthcare accessible to patients regardless of geographical limitations. Our mission extends beyond borders, creating pathways for patients to receive essential treatments and empowering healthcare providers to collaborate internationally.

Mozocare’s network of partnerships spans numerous countries, enabling patients to access specialized care, advanced treatments, and innovative medical procedures that may not be available in their home countries. This commitment reflects the essence of the One Earth, One Health vision, where healthcare is a right, not a privilege, and patients receive the care they need, no matter where they are.

Building a Healthier Future Together

The One Earth, One Health & Healthcare Beyond Boundaries event in Addis Ababa represents a significant milestone in the global healthcare landscape, symbolizing a commitment to unity, collaboration, and shared responsibility in addressing healthcare challenges. By bringing together diverse voices from across the health sector, the conference underscores the importance of global cooperation in building a more inclusive and resilient healthcare system.

Through India’s visionary leadership, the event set the stage for ongoing collaboration between countries, healthcare organizations, and private sector leaders. Mozocare stands ready to support this mission, continuously working to expand access to high-quality, affordable healthcare for all.
