What is Chalazion?

Chalazion, or a chalazia, is when a lida gland becomes inflamed and starts to develop a lump on either the upper or lower eyelid. Its texture can either be soft and full of fluid or slightly more firm. A chalazion is also known as a meibomian which is named after the meibomian eyelid glands that become infected. Additional names given to this area are the tarsoconjunctival glands, the palpebral glands, and the tarsal glands. In each of the lower and upper lids, there are thirty to forty glands which produces a thick liquid secretion made up of oil and mucus. This is called sebum and it is discharged into the tear film of the eye. This liquid is part of the eye's process of maintaining and lubricating its surface to keep it clean. The tiny openings of each of these oil or sebaceous glands are just behind the lashes at the edges of both the upper and lower eyelids.

The secretion from the meibomian gland must pass through a very narrow gap and can stimes become clogged which is caused by the sebaceous liquid having become hardened near the opening. In the event of this, the gland has a reserve of the liquid material which is secreted and will eventually cause the obstructed gland to become swollen. When this occurs, the walls of the gland become more thick and oil begins to leak into the lid. This then results in an inflamed gland and eyelid which is the chalazion.
