Chest X-Ray

The procedure in which the images of the patient's lungs, airways, bone of spine and chest, and blood vessels is called a Chest x-ray. The chest x-ray can revolve the fluid-filled around the lungs or the air surrounding the lungs. The chest x-rays are commonly done if a patient complains about any chest pain, chest injury, or even shortness in their breath. The images that you get from the chest x-rays enable the doctor to diagnose if there is any problem or underlying issue such as pneumonia, collapsed lung, broken rib, emphysema, or even cancer at times.

The patient may be concerned about radiation exposure from chest X-rays, especially if they need to have them regularly. However the amount of radiation from a chest X-ray is less, it is even lesser than what they are exposed to through natural sources of radiation in the environment.
Even though the benefits of an X-ray outweigh the risk, the patient may be given a protective apron if they are in need of multiple images. It is important to tell the doctor if the patient is pregnant or might be pregnant. The procedure can be performed in a way to protect the patient's abdomen from the radiation.

About Chest X-Ray

Chest X-ray is one of the most common procedures to diagnose any disease or injury. A chest X-ray is often one of the first procedures that the patient will have if the doctor suspects any heart or lung disease. A chest X-ray can also be used to monitor how the patient is responding to the treatment.
A chest X-ray can expose many things inside the body, such as:

  • Condition of the lungs
  • Lung problems that are related to heart
  • To check the size and outline of the heart
  • Proper functioning of blood vessels
  • To see if there are any calcium deposits
  • Fractures
  • Postoperative changes

Before Procedure / Treatment

The chest X-rays need very little preparation on the part of the patient getting it.
Before the X-ray, the patient should undress from the waist up and change into a given hospital gown.
The patient will be needed to remove any jewelry, eyeglasses, body piercings, or other metal accessories on the person. It is important to tell the doctor if the patient has any surgically implanted device, such as a heart valve or even a pacemaker. The doctor may opt for a chest X-ray if you have metal implants. Other scans, such as MRI, can be hazardous for people who have metal in their bodies.
