Myocardial Bridge Treatment

Myocardium is a word used for heart muscles. In normal condition the coronary arteries in the heart lie on the surface but in myocardial bridge it runs through the heart muscles.

People with myocardial bridge have increased risk of atherosclerosis.

Treatment and management for myocardial bridge includes – • Medication - antiplatelet, beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, etc. • Surgery – It includes supra-arterial myotomy or coronary artery bypass.

Myocardial bridge is a congenital defect of the heart.

The condition is mostly asymptomatic. If the heart falls short of blood supply you may have – • Pain in the chest • Shortness of breath • Feeling of heaviness on the chest • Tiredness • Pain in the left arm or jaw

Following tests are used to diagnose myocardial bridge – • Cardiac catherization with angiography • Nuclear stress test • Exercise stress test

Myocardial bridge is a benign condition, and the symptoms may not appear. But it may cause serious life-threatening complications such as irregular heartbeat, transient ventricular dysfunction.

Strenuous exercise or physical activity can enhance the risk complications.

You may need following changes - • Diet modification • Light physical activity • Reduce stress • Quit smoking

The actual prevalence of myocardial bridge is not known.
