Pelvic Ultrasound

The Pelvic ultrasound is a test used to get the images of the pelvic area by using sound waves. This test is usually ordered by the doctor to diagnose any disease in the pelvic area and check the health of the baby in pregnant women.

In women the pelvic ultrasound is used to:

  • Find difficulties with the structure of their uterus or ovaries
  • Are looking for the cancer cells in their ovaries, uterus, or bladder
  • Found an (IUD) Intrauterine device
  • Looking for the growths like noncancerous tumors, fibroids, or cysts
  • Discover the cause of severe abnormal bleeding and pain or both sometimes
  • Evaluate or treat their fertility obstacles
  • Monitor the growth of the baby during the pregnancy
  • Check for any pelvic inflammatory diseases (PID -- an infection of your uterus, ovaries, or fallopian tubes)
  • Diagnose an ectopic pregnancy (a condition where the fertilized egg grows outside of the uterus)
  • Obtain a tissue sample to remove it from the uterus during an endometrial biopsy.

In men the pelvic ultrasound is used to:

  • Monitor the problems with the bladder, prostate gland, and seminal vesicles
  • Find if there are any bladder tumors or stones

Need Customized Treatment Plan

The pelvic ultrasound is one of the safest scans, The test itself doesn’t have risks. As the ultrasound does not use any x-rays, chemicals, or radiations to conduct the test.
However, the patient might feel some discomfort during a transvaginal or transrectal ultrasound when the transducer is inserted.
Pelvic ultrasound is conducted in men and women for different reasons:

In women, pelvic ultrasound is conducted to check the proper functioning of:

  • Uterus
  • Vagina
  • Bladder
  • Fallopian tubes
  • Ovaries
  • Cervix

In men, pelvic ultrasound is conducted to check the proper functioning of:

  • Bladder
  • Prostate gland
  • Seminal vesicles (glands that add fluid to semen)

If the patient is having a transabdominal ultrasound, then their bladder should be full to get the clear images from the scan. The patients are advised to drink about 32 ounces -- or four 8-ounce glasses -- of water or another clear fluid at least 1 hour before the test. A full bladder makes the internal organs show up more clearly in the picture.
However, A transvaginal ultrasound is done with an empty bladder. The patient is said to use the bathroom before the test.
One should wear loose, comfortable clothes for the exam. The patient might need to wear a gown during the procedure of scan.
