A root section is an oral surgery procedure where the surgeon removes all or part of a single root of a tooth. The surgeon first exposes the roots of the tooth, and then uses a drill to remove the root and sometimes part of the crown. A root resection is usually used to avoid a which would mean the tooth would have to be replaced with a dental implant. This procedure is usually performed on molars in the back, since they have more than one root. Root resections are performed under local anesthetic, so the patient is awake and alert during the procedure but the area is numbed. Root resections are less common now than they were in the past because of advancements in implant technology that gives dentists other options in cases where the rest of the tooth cannot be saved.

This procedure may not give the same long-lasting results as an implant. A general dentist with special, advanced training may be capable of performing a root section, but they are often performed by an endodontist or an oral surgeon. A root resection is an option if a single root of a tooth is infected or damaged. The root resection may allow the doctor to save the rest of the tooth. This procedure is different from a conventional root canal treatment, but since the procedure involves cutting into the inside of a tooth a root canal treatment is usually necessary before a root resection can be done. It is generally preferable to perform a root resection and try to save the tooth rather than extracting it and replacing it with an implant as natural teeth are stronger and more aesthetically pleasing than implants
