The testicular ultrasound is a test that is used to diagnose the proper functioning of the testicles and the area around it in the scrotum by obtaining the images of it using the sound waves. The testicular ultrasound is also called a testicular sonogram or scrotal ultrasound.
A testicular ultrasound is the initial imaging method used to examine and diagnose abnormalities in the testicles. The doctor may recommend a testicular ultrasound to:
The echoes from the ultrasound can provide real-time still or moving images. Data from moving images are used in monitoring blood flow to and from the testicles. Each testicle connects to the rest of the body with the help of a spermatic cord. This tube includes an artery and a vein. The tube also contains the vas deferens, which carry sperm from the testicles to the urethra. The doctor can study blood flow in the testicles to find narrowing or blockages interfering with the flow of semen and hindering fertility. A testicular ultrasound won’t put the patient at risk for any health problems, as there’s no radiation exposure during the whole procedure. However, the patient may have increased pain or discomfort during the procedure if they have certain testicular issues, such as testicular torsion or an infection.
A testicular ultrasound is usually an outpatient procedure performed in the radiology department of a hospital or at the doctor’s office.
Typically, a testicular ultrasound takes about 20 to 30 minutes. It involves following some steps such as changing into a hospital gown. The patient won’t receive sedatives, anesthesia, or topical numbing agents.
The patient is told to lie on their back with their legs spread. The ultrasound technician may place a towel underneath the scrotum to keep it elevated. They may place wide strips of tape across the thighs and under the scrotum to elevate your scrotum. The patient is required to completely be still during the whole procedure.
